The PSP had one of the most underrated game libraries of any console. Action games, RPGs, racers, fighters — Sony's portable powerhouse punched well above its weight. And now, thanks to modern retro handhelds, you can play the best of the PSP library on a device that fits in your pocket.
Not every PSP game runs perfectly on budget handhelds, though. The chipset matters, and performance varies depending on which device you have. We have tested dozens of PSP titles across the R36S, R36S Max and R36S Ultra to find the games that actually run well — not just the ones that technically boot.
Here are the best PSP games worth playing on your retro handheld in 2026.
Which Handhelds Can Run PSP Games?
Before we dive into the games, a quick note on compatibility. PSP emulation is more demanding than PS1, SNES or GBA, so not every handheld handles it equally:
- R36S Ultra — Best PSP performance. Handles most titles at full speed with minimal framerate drops. This is the one to get if PSP gaming is a priority.
- R36S Max — Runs many PSP games well, especially 2D titles and less demanding 3D games. Some heavier titles need frameskip.
- R36S — Can handle lighter PSP games (2D fighters, puzzle games, some RPGs) but struggles with demanding 3D titles like God of War.
Every game on this list runs well on the R36S Ultra. We have noted where a game also runs comfortably on the R36S Max or standard R36S.
Action & Adventure
The PSP was home to some genuinely console-quality action games. These titles pushed the hardware to its limits and remain brilliant to play today.
- God of War: Chains of Olympus — Kratos on a handheld should not have worked this well. Stunning visuals, brutal combat and a tight 6-hour campaign that never wastes a moment. Best on: R36S Ultra
- God of War: Ghost of Sparta — Even better than Chains of Olympus in many ways, with bigger set pieces and more refined combat. A proper AAA experience in your pocket. Best on: R36S Ultra
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories — A full open-world GTA game with that unmistakable 80s Miami vibe. The empire-building mechanic adds a layer of strategy on top of the usual chaos. Best on: R36S Ultra, playable on R36S Max
- Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories — Return to Liberty City in a prequel to GTA III. Slightly less demanding than Vice City Stories, making it a solid choice for the R36S Max too. Best on: R36S Ultra, R36S Max
- Daxter — A charming platformer set in the Jak and Daxter universe. Surprisingly polished, with great humour and varied gameplay. Best on: R36S Ultra, R36S Max

Tips for Best PSP Performance
Getting the best out of PSP emulation on your retro handheld comes down to a few key settings:
- Use PPSSPP — All our handhelds come pre-loaded with PPSSPP, the best PSP emulator. Make sure you are using the latest version for the best compatibility.
- Enable frameskip for demanding games — If a game stutters, setting frameskip to 1 in PPSSPP can smooth things out without making it feel sluggish.
- Lower rendering resolution — Dropping from 2x to 1x resolution can dramatically improve performance on heavier titles.
- Close other emulators first — PSP emulation uses more memory and processing power, so close background apps before launching PPSSPP.
The Verdict
The PSP library is one of gaming's best-kept secrets, and retro handhelds have given it a second life. Whether you want a cinematic action game, a hundred-hour RPG or a quick puzzle fix, there is a PSP title on this list for you.
If PSP gaming is a priority for you, the R36S Ultra is the clear choice — it handles virtually everything on this list at full speed. The R36S Max is a great middle ground, handling most titles well with the odd tweak. And even the standard R36S can run lighter PSP games alongside its brilliant PS1, SNES and GBA library.
